PREPARING FOR COLLEGE OR PREPARING FOR LIFE?

While the students of Class 12 (2021) in India, await the final decision/ schedule of their Board Examinations by 1st of June, as a counselor and guide I ask a question from these youngsters --- What’s with these Exams and your Future? A lot of people answer, saying, the entire life of these children depends on the result of this ONE examination. College selection to admission, all is determined by this benchmark.

My next question then is --- Why? Who decided that this ONE examination should decide it all?

The last couple of Batches of Grade 12 -- 2020 and 2021(any Board) will agree that the results prepared under the stressful, difficult and diverse situations – emotionally, demographically, geographically etc are definitely not the exact reflection of the child’s academic abilities. There have been multifold external influences and the outcome is not the absolute result of the student’s input or ability.

This once again brings us to the much debated issue of evaluation. Yes, it is necessary. Evaluation, if effectively implemented, is also a self motivation medium. The rubrics in place, it can guide and help the individual to improve and excel. The question or the debate has always been regarding the ONE TEST FITS ALL. The cumulative and continuous evaluation is the most authentic form of assessment and needs to be adopted. Above all, is the academic assessment an overall assessment? Is the allotment of grades and marks the final stamp on the child’s capability?

The World changed dramatically in 2020, and we all are seeing and feeling those changes. The job market has been drastically affected and has evolved much faster than expected. The youth needs to be prepared for this fast paced dynamic World rather than College A or B. Academics alone CANNOT achieve this dynamism.

The multidisciplinary approach recommended by the NEP 2020 for the Higher Education Institutions is definitely a progressive step. Preparing the youth to understand and comprehend the various disciplines and their interrelation and interdependence will ensure a better adaptable population for the future.  The need for this approach to percolate down to the School levels is also essential in the current scenarios and preparing the students for LIFE should now take precedence over COLLEGE.

Life skills, Vocational exposure, multidisciplinary concepts, technology inclusion, demographic inclusion etc are some steps we need to add to our basic desires of marks and grades. These need to also find equal impetus in the College Admission processes to reduce the stress and partial selection systems. The overall Profile of the Child needs to be the benchmark for the higher education course as it will ensure the investment in the correct and the best candidate.
